Fedder’s One-Hitter, Mollura’s Five RBI Spark Lady Bison

HYDE — Abby Fedder’s one-hit pitching gem and Kyra Mollura’s three-single, five-RBI performance highlighted the Clearfield Area High School softball team’s most complete game of the season Monday afternoon.

The Lady Bison excelled in all three phases as they backed Fedder with flawless defense coupled with a season-high 13-hit attack in the 11-0 Mercy Rule victory over Hollidaysburg on Senior Day at the Bison Sports Complex.

“That’s the winning combination,” Clearfield coach Bob Lewis said. “Pitch well, play defense well and hit the ball hard. It was a nice, impressive win for the team.”

He summed up Fedder’s effort in two words, “Masterful job.”

The junior right-hander struck out three and walked one in her five-inning stint, missing a no-no when Morgan Seiler’s first-inning blooper landed near the first base line, spun and stayed fair.

Seiler was the lone Lady Tiger to reach base, drawing a full-count walk in the fourth frame.

Fedder didn’t have to contend with any more three-ball counts as 38 of her 59 pitches were strikes.

“She mixed speeds, her changeup was working well, and she kept their batters off balance,” Lewis said. “She did a great job of locating down in the zone and induced a lot of ground balls.”

Five of the Golden Tiger grounders were handled by third baseman Kirstin Norman.

In addition to freshman catcher Mollura’s breakout game, Clearfield’s offensive production included a double and a single by Fedder and Aspen Bishop and pairs of singles by Makeeli Redden and Lindsay Hand.

Molly Sartin, the lone Lady Bison recognized in the pre-game ceremony that also recognized the Lady Tiger seniors, chipped in an RBI double.

Clearfield (3-15) exploded for seven runs on six hits in the first inning.

Mollura’s two-run single to right center was the big hit in the Lady Bison’s biggest outburst of the season following run-scoring hits by Fedder, Redden, Bishop and Hand, who crossed the plate on a wild pitch.

They stretched the bulge to 10-0 in the third inning when Mollura singled home Bishop and Hand and then circled the sacks on Sartin’s two-bagger to deep left field.

Those three runs assured the Lady Bison of an early quit the way Fedder was pitching, but they tacked on another in the fourth on Redden’s single, a walk and Mollura’s sharp grounder through the middle.

Lewis explained he had dropped Mollura into the bottom third of the order recently because of a hitting slump and then plugged her into the No. 9 hole for the non-league game against Hollidaysburg (0-15).

“I was hoping she would see a lot of fastballs, and she jumped all over some pitches,” he explained. “She had a couple of really good shots.

Lewis was quick to point out that Mollura also picked off Seiler following her infield hit.

“She has really solidified that catching spot for us,” he said. “She has a good arm and a nice, quick release. She’s able to control the running games of other teams.

“We’ve encouraged her to make the throw if she recognizes that a runner is straying too far off the base, but that pickoff was a set play on a signal between her and me. Abby threw a rise out of the zone, and she threw a dart.”

Clearfield (3-15) will go to Altoona in a game recently moved from Tuesday to Wednesday before closing the season by hosting Bradford Thursday.
