KANE — The way to get over a tough loss for any team is to get back to action, focusing on the new game as if it’s the start of a new season. It is PSU’s James Franklin who tells his team each week during the fall season, “Let’s go 1-0.”
The Curwensville Golden Tide had to do that after falling to Clearfield just two days ago, adjusting their focus to Thursday’s league contest against the Kane Wolves.
All that focus paid off as a pair of strong back-to-back innings by the Tide allowed them to defeat the Wolves, 4-1. It’s the second time Curwensville has beaten the Wolves this season. It was back on April 24 when Curwensville got the first of the two wins against Kane, a 16-6 victory in five innings.
After struggling on the mound just two days ago, the Tide pitching for Tom Harzinski’s squad was stellar. Noah VonGunden got the chance to start once again, and pitched his best game of the season. His seven innings of work yielded seven strikeouts, while giving up just five hits.
It wasn’t the Tide who originally got on the board first though.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, a fielder’s choice by Jacob Silvis was enough to bring Cyrus Novosel home to give Kane the early lead.
Up to that point, Kane looked strong on the mound. Novosel started strong for the Wolves, but found himself in trouble in the top of the fifth inning. Following a walk to Josh Terry and a double by VonGunden, Ralph Evans put Curwensville ahead with a two-RBI single into left-center. The 2-1 advantage was the first lead change in the game, which ultimately was the final one of the game.
VonGunden then helped his own cause one inning later, hitting his own two-RBI single that brought Zach McClure and Christian Bakaysa to the plate, giving Curwensville some insurance runs heading into the final inning.
Novosel was pulled after two outs in the sixth inning, after yielding nine hits and four runs, two of which were earned. He ultimately was given the loss, as VonGunden pitched a scoreless seventh inning to close out the fifth win of the Tide season.
Hoping to keep that momentum going, Curwensville (5-10) has a rare Saturday game, a make-up game against Glendale. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
