HYDE — Will Myers got back on track on the mound, the batters got untracked at the plate and the Clearfield Area High School baseball team defeated Brookville 12-2 in six innings at the Bison Sports Complex Friday afternoon.
Myers pitched a six-hitter with eight strikeouts and no walks four days after issuing six walks in less than five innings of a 5-2 loss to Huntingdon.
“Will had a much better performance than the other night,” Bison coach Sid Lansberry said. “He got behind the hitters in his last outing, and that’s what got him in trouble.
“He had kind of a rough start, but then he settled down and got better as the game went on. He had a better curve than he had against Huntingdon.”
Brookville (4-8) got a home run from Ben Caun in the second inning and an unearned run on Aaron Park’s RBI single in the third.
Myers faced only 10 batters over the last three innings thanks to Eli Glass’ unassisted double play in the fifth. The Bison shortstop speared Seth Dunkle’s line drive and stepped on second, missing a triple play when his throw to first base was off target.
A rare 3-6-1 twinkilling had helped get Myers out of another two-on, no-out situation in the first frame.
Producing runs was not a problem as the Bison matched their season high with 12 hits.
Myers, Thayne Morgan, Reese Wilson, Zane Morgan and Seth Bumbarger had two apiece.
Glass had the big blow, though, belting a three-run double to put Clearfield (7-6) up 11-2 with two outs in the sixth inning.
Moments later, Myers lofted a fly ball to short right on the second pitch from Tyler Park, the third Raider hurler, to chase home Glass for the Mercy Rule finish to the non-league game.
The two combined for seven RBIs, Glass registering a sacrifice fly in the third and Myers cracking a two-run double in the first.
Tommy Hazel chipped in a pair of run-producing flyouts.
The Bison tagged starter Bryan Dworek for five runs on five hits in the first three innings and reliever Dane Lyle for seven runs on six hits.
“It’s great to see the offense come around, and that could make a big difference in the rest of the season,” Lansberry said. “Basically, except in a couple of instances, we haven’t hit as well as I thought we would.
“Brookville is gonna be good. They have lot of sophomores and freshmen, and they’ve had some close games. We’ve seen this group coming.
“It’s good to end a tough, four-game week with a win.”
One game above .500 for the fourth time this season, the Bison will make five road trips in the first nine days of May, beginning with Monday’s non-league game at Bradford.
