LIGONIER — Junior Jason Thorp (Curwensville) recorded his best two rounds of the spring season for Thiel last week, including a one-over-par 72 at the Champion Lakes Golf Course near Ligonier Friday that tied his career low.
He wound up fourth in leading the Tomcats (334 total) to a fourth-place finish in the nine-team Doug Rogers Memorial Invitational hosted by Saint Vincent.
Four days earlier, Thorp shot a 76 at The Greens of Greenville to share team medalist honors with Jonathan Loomis as the Tomcats (328) claimed second place behind Washington & Jefferson (297) in the Thiel Spring Invitational.

WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD
SLIPPERY ROCK — Senior Jessica Shomo (Clearfield) improved her No. 2 time for the 100 meters in the Clarion record book by sprinting down the William Lennox Track in 12.36 seconds at the Slippery Rock Open Thursday night.
She clipped two-hundredths of a second of her previous career mark established last year.
Shomo also ran on the Golden Eagle 4×100 relay team that placed fourth in 48.78 seconds.

LEWISBURG — Senior Rebecca Johnson (Curwensville) set a personal record for the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 12:41.36 at the Bucknell Team Challenge in Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium Saturday.
She knocked 3.49 seconds off her previous best for the running and jumping event, earning seventh-place points for the Red Flash who finished fourth among seven teams with 81.50 points.
Sophomore Sarah Lash (Clearfield) also contributed by placing seventh in the javelin with a throw of 38.94 meters (127 feet, 9 inches).
Lash set a personal record in the hammer throw with a 34.67-meter (113-4) effort that was good for 20th place. She broke the freshman season PR of 32.44 meters (106-5¼).

BASEBALL
DUBOIS — Sophomore infielder/catcher Josh Sorbera (Clearfield) wielded a hot bat, hiking his average to .417, and freshman pitcher Brandon Orsich (Clearfield) earned his second ‘W’ as Penn State DuBois won five of seven games last week, with three of the victories setting the Lions’ final regular season record at 11-1 for a repeat as Pennsylvania State University Athletic Conference West Division champions.
Sorbera singled for an RBI and scored a run in the 11-5 nightcap win for a sweep at Penn State Mont Alto Monday, April 17, and singled twice, drove in a run and scored once in a five-inning 20-2 win at Penn State New Kensington Sunday.
He also had three hits in the Lions’ 8-2 and 11-1 non-conference victories over Kent State-Tuscarawas (Ohio) at Showers Field Saturday.
Orsich picked up the victory in the second game with 3-2/3 innings of scoreless relief, allowing only one hit while striking out five batters and hitting one.
The right-hander has made nine appearances, including four starts, and pitched 23 innings with a 6.26 earned run average and nine strikeouts, three walks and one hit batsman. He has surrendered 26 hits and 22 runs, 16 earned.
Sorbera is 10-for-24 in 15 games, with 10 starts, half of them at third base, three behind the plate and the last two at second base. He has one double and six RBIs.

ERIE — Junior Kurtis Krise (Clearfield) pitched one inning in relief for Penn State Altoona in a 13-2 loss Penn State Behrend Saturday.
He entered with the bases loaded and no outs in the seventh inning and gave up two earned runs on two walks and three hits.
The Lions (14-17) won the opener 3-2 and hold down fourth place in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference with a 5-5 record.
In nine appearances, including two starts, Krise (1-0) has pitched 20 innings with a 5.85 earned run average. He has given up 30 hits and 20 runs, 13 earned, while striking out 11, walking nine and hitting two batters.

FORT PIERCE, Fla. — Sophomore outfielder/designated hitter Thomas Summers (Clearfield) finished his rookie season with Indian River State College on the upswing with four hits in four games last week.
He singled and doubled for his third multi-hit performance in the Pioneers’ 10-0 loss to Eastern Florida State College Wednesday and had his first triple for an RBI in a 10-3 loss to Broward College in the season finale Saturday.
Summers started seven games in left field and 25 as the designated hitter for the Pioneers, who were 13-31 overall and 7-21 in the National Junior College Athletic Association Region 8 Southern Conference.
Summers was 19-for-113 at the plate, a .168 average, with five doubles and five RBIs. He drew 11 walks and was hit twice.
The left-hander pitched one scoreless inning in his lone appearance on the mound.

SOFTBALL
CLARION — Junior pitcher Rachel Hoffman (Clearfield) was 1-2 in the circle for Clarion last week with her 7-0 win over host Pitt-Johnstown Friday ending the Golden Eagles’ eight-game losing streak.
She struck out four, walked two and hit one in her fourth shutout of the season.
Hoffman was on the opposite side of decisions in home losses to Slippery Rock, 8-3, on Wednesday and Indiana University of Pennsylvania, 9-3, Saturday.
She had two singles and drove in one run in eight at-bats in those three games.
Hoffman owns a 5-12 record with a 4.14 earned run average, 81 strikeouts and 40 walks for 120 innings.
She has 13 hits, including two doubles and one home run, for a .186 batting average with five RBIs.
Clarion is 2-14 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Central Division and 6-38 overall.
