HYDE — The Clearfield Area High School softball team outhit Huntingdon 10-6 and Abby Fedder turned in her best pitching performance of the season, but the Lady Bison failed to break into the win column Monday because of eight errors and having two runners thrown out at the plate.
Four unearned runs enabled the Lady Bearcats to escape with a 7-6 Mountain League victory at the Bison Sports Complex when right fielder Natalee Shingler cut down courtesy runner Maddie Lewis trying to score the tying run on Lindsay Hand’s single in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Hand’s bases-loaded hit had driven in Makeeli Redden, running for Makayla Ross after she was hit by a pitch.
Aspen Bishop’s RBI single gave Clearfield (0-9, 0-8 ML) a brief 1-0 lead after one inning, but Huntingdon opened a 6-1 lead over the next three at-bats, with only two of the runs earned.
Singles by Destiny Biemesderfer and Shingler, an RBI groundout by Gabby Brown and a Lady Bison misplay had the Lady Bearcats on top 2-1 in the second.
Hannah Heintzelman tripled to right center and scored on an error in the third.
Huntingdon’s run total doubled on Leah Miller’s homer to deep left field with two aboard in the top of the fourth.
The Lady Bison drew close, 6-5, with a four-spot in the bottom of the inning as Erica Hanes and Brooke Cline, who extended her hitting streak to nine games, came through with two-run singles. Fedder’s single, Kate Lansberry’s double and a hit batsman had loaded the bases.
Heintzelman belted a solo homer over the fence in left center in the sixth inning for what proved to be the deciding run that made Catherine Miller the winning hurler. She struck out seven and walked five while giving up six earned runs.
Fedder had better stats, spinning a six-hitter with seven strikeouts, two walks and just three earned runs allowed in Clearfield’s first complete game of the season.
Cline, Fedder and Hand had two singles apiece for the Lady Bison, who travel to Huntingdon Tuesday.
Mountain League standings – Philipsburg-Osceola 6-1, Bellefonte 6-1, Central 6-1, Bald Eagle Area 4-3, Huntingdon 4-3, Penns Valley 2-5, Tyrone 1-7, Clearfield 0-8.
