CURWENSVILLE – The DuBois Central Catholic (DCC) girls softball team made quick work of Curwensville on Friday afternoon on the Lady Tide’s home field, winning 12-1 in a game shortened to five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.
The victory also keeps the Lady Cardinals perfect on the year at 9-0.
Senior Riley Assalone went the distance for DCC, scattering six hits while striking out nine Lady Tide hitters.
The lone Curwensville run came in the fourth inning when freshman catcher Bailey Bloom led off with a double just inside the left field line and then scored with two outs on an RBI single by left fielder Ariel Zattoni to left field.
Curwensville had a couple of other scoring threats, leaving two runners on in the first inning and again in the fifth.
DuBois Central Catholic had a 6-1 margin after four innings but scored another six tallies in the top half of the fifth inning that sealed the win.
Assalone had four RBI’s for DCC with two hits, one being a double.
Five other Lady Cardinals also had two hits each – Macey Hanes, Jordan Frank, Ashley Wruble, Libby Maurer and Alyssa Bittner.
Wruble smacked two triples while Frank also added a three base hit.
Mauer and Shay Gulvas added a double each as the Lady Cardinals banged out six extra base hits on the afternoon.
Allen Leigey, Lady Tide head coach, had praise for his squad even after losing to one of the better teams in District 9, saying afterwards, “I was really impressed with how we put the ball in play a lot today. I know we struck out nine times, but what I was happy about was the fact we very aggressive all the time in the batter’s box. I am sure going forward we can build on this.”
The Lady Tide are now 2-5 on the season and have a double-header Saturday at North Star with game one starting at 11 am.
