HUNTINGDON — Out-hit 8-4, the Clearfield Area High School baseball team took advantage of Huntingdon pitchers’ control problems to open the season with a 7-5 Mountain League victory Thursday afternoon.
Four Bearcat hurlers issued 10 walks, and five of the Bison who received free tickets came around to score.
Half of the walks figured in the three runs Clearfield tallied to grab a 7-4 lead in the fifth inning.
Reese Wilson, who had advanced to third base with one of his steals and a groundout, dashed home on a passed ball for the go-ahead run. Later, Will Myers crossed the plate on a wild pitch and, after two more walks, Seth Bumbarger scored on Thayne Morgan’s single.
Tommy Hazel then saved the win for starter Josh Sorbera, allowing four hits and one run while striking out two.
Sorbera had similar stats in his four-inning stint except for runs. He gave up four runs, three of them unearned.
Neither Bison pitcher surrendered a walk.
Clearfield went in front 3-1 in the third frame on Wilson’s RBI single, Zane Morgan’s steal of home and Hazel’s RBI double.
Nick Holesa’s two-run double got the Bearcats even in the bottom of the inning, and the teams matched singletons in the fourth.
The Bison go back on the road Saturday for a 3 p.m. ML makeup game against Central at Martinsburg.
