MARTINSBURG — Central staked Kate Thompson to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, and the junior left-hander went on to four-hit Clearfield for an 8-0 shutout in a Mountain League girls softball make-up game Wednesday afternoon.
Brooke Cline had two hits, one a double, for the Lady Bison in their season opener.
Olivia Smith tripled to trigger Central’s early rally. After Jenna Ritchey drew a walk off Abby Fedder, Tierney Fernandes singled for one run and Camryn Feathers belted a two-out, two-run double.
The Scarlet Dragons (2-0) picked up an unearned run in the second inning and then ballooned their lead to 7-0 in the fourth with five hits, including RBI singles by Jenna Ritchey and Fernandes.
Thompson struck out six and walked three in her route-going performance.
Fedder had two strike outs and two walks while giving up eight hits and seven earned runs. She had to return to the circle when reliever Erica Hanes was hit by a liner off the bat off the second batter she faced in the fourth inning.
The Lady Bison will begin their home schedule against Huntingdon Friday at 4:30 p.m.
