SPRING MILLS — Penns Valley put the clamps on the Clearfield offense after the first quarter to pull away to a 53-38 victory in Mountain League schoolgirl basketball action Wednesday night.
The Lady Rams came out of the fast-paced first period with a 23-18 lead that the Lady Bison trimmed to 27-25 by halftime, but the hosts also limited the Lady Bison to single digits in the last two quarters to move into a second place tie with Central at 8-2.
“It was a well-played game, but they just played better defense than us,” Clearfield coach Joey Castagnolo said. “We didn’t get a lot of good shots against their man-to-man.”
Alayna Ryan was the lone Lady Bison (10-6) in double figures with 13 points.
Emma Butler paced the Lady Rams (10-5) to their fourth win in a row with 17 points, including two of their six three-pointers. Peyton Homan and Kourtney Beamesdorfer, who netted three shots from behind the arc, added 12 and 10, respectively.
Clearfield will have to contend with the league leaders Friday when Tyrone visits the Bison Gymnasium.
Penns Valley also was the winner, 40-16, in the junior varsity game.
