Bison Boys Win On The Road At Huntingdon 68-51

HUNTINGDON – The Clearfield Bison boys basketball team made it three in a row to start the 2016-17 season with an important road win in Huntingdon Friday night, defeating the Bearcats 68-51 in a Mountain League game.

After the road win Clearfield head coach Nate Glunt commented about the competitiveness of Huntingdon, saying, “Huntingdon always gives us a tough battle here or even when we play them at home. I think they have an excellent team. They shoot the ball well without hesitation and have good overall quickness.”

And the Bearcats hung with Clearfield over the first eight minutes of action as the score was all knotted at 18 apiece going into the second period.

The lead changed hands seven rimes before the end of the first period as Tommy Hazel dumped in six for Clearfield and Bearcat Matt Sellers did the same.

Bison senior Evan Brown got things rolling in the second stanza by hitting a three-pointer and then a two point field goal in the first 45 seconds as Clearfield took a 23-18.

It was a lead Clearfield would not give up, and a lead the Bison kept building upon.

Clearfield outscored Huntingdon 25-13 to take a 43-31 halftime edge thanks to 11 more points from Hazel and seven from Brown.

The Bison extended their margin to 56-38 after three periods with good defense, holding the Bearcats to just seven points while adding 13 to its total.

The teams traded baskets in the fourth quarter with Bison Will Myers hitting for six points.

Of the first three games of this season Tommy Hazel, Will Myers and Evan Brown each have hit for double figures.

Hazel led all scorers with 21, while Brown added 19 and Myers 18.

Myers hit another career milestone during the game, surpassing Mark Crossan for sixth place on the Bison all-time scoring list.

With his 18 points against the Bearcats Myers now has a career total of 1,062. Crossan, a 1981 Bison graduate, finished his career with 1,055.

Next in site for Myers is 1970 Clearfield grad Dick Troxell who sits in fifth place with 1,164 points.

Glunt also liked what he saw from his squad, commenting, “I saw big improvement in our all around play tonight. I thought we did an excellent job most of the game. The press did bother us some in the second half. That was a learning situation for us and we will work on that and do better.”

Huntingdon did win the junior varsity contest by a score of 61-44 over Clearfield. Wyatt Porter had 11 points to lead the Bison.

Next up for Clearfield (3-0), will be another Mountain League battle on Monday evening in Bellefonte, against the Red Raiders. The JV game tips off at 6 pm with the varsity to immediately follow.
