ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Senior Nolan Barger (Clearfield) won the 165-pound title and freshman Travis Ogden (Clearfield) placed fifth at 197 to help Lycoming claim team honors in the Rochester Institute of Technology Invitational Saturday.
Barger began his run to the top with a pair of first-period falls that boosted him into fourth place on the Warriors’ all-time list with 36.
After pinning Aaron Cranston of Wesleyan at 2:18 and Zachary Peterson of Oneonta at 1:52, he defeated Alfred’s Tristan Almeter 7-2, John Carroll’s Jimmy Suhayda 5-2 and Oswego’s Troy Seymour 2-1.
Barger (16-1) is ranked fifth by the National Wrestling Coaches Association and seventh by d3wrestle.com.
Ogden was one of the busiest wrestlers in the 12-team tourney with eight matches, winning five for a 12-6 record for the season.
He bested Case Western Reserve’s Christopher Zhang 11-4 and pinned Worcester Polytechnic Institute’s Andrew Hubina at 5:44 to reach the quarterfinals, where he was edged, 5-4, by Thiel’s Gage Gladysz, the eventual champion.
Ogden rebounded to major decision Alfred’s Brandyn Whitacre 10-2 and pin Case Western Reserve’s Gavin Dersh-Fisher at 6:24 to advance to the consolation semifinals.
After losing by fall in 4:41 to Oneonta’s Peter Pjetri to drop into the fifth-place bout, Ogden got a rematch with Hubina and registered a 6-0 shutout. Pjetri placed third.
Barger and Ogden contributed 20 and 14 points, respectively, to Lycoming’s total of 130, nine more than No. 15-ranked Oneonta and Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
The tourney championship was Lycoming’s first since 2003.

MEN’S SWIMMING
WOOSTER, Ohio — Sophomore Michael Spencer (Clearfield) was a member of a winning relay foursome and also picked up points in three individual events and three other relay races as Westminster grabbed second place in the three-day The College of Wooster Invitational last weekend.
He turned in a 20.60-second third leg to team up with Matt Kwalick, Daniel Bogen and Mitch Stahara for a season-best 1:23.88 in their 200-yard freestyle relay victory.
Spencer qualified for three individual finals with his best times of the season, 21.48 for the 50 free, 49.27 for the 100 free and 52.19 for the 100 butterfly.
Then, he tied for fifth in the 50 free ‘A’ final in 21.54, placed 16th in the 100 fly ’B’ final in 53.63 and wound up 20th in the 100 free ’C’ final in 49.1o.
Spencer anchored the Titan 200 medley ‘A’ relay quartet’s third-place finish in 1:34.72 with a 20.87 second split.
He logged a 49.39 second leg for the 400 free ‘B’ foursome that finished 10th in 3:15.69 and swam the fly leg in 52.90 for the 400 medley ‘B’ team that placed 11th in 3:34.17.
With 1,215 points, the Titans finished behind Case Western Reserve (1,618 points) and just ahead of Gannon (1,206).

MEN’S BASKETBALL
GREENSBURG — Freshman forward Cody Spaid (Clearfield) hit season highs with seven points and five rebounds in Pitt-Greensburg’s 101-86 loss at Penn State Altoona’s Adler Gym last Wednesday that was the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opener for both teams.
He followed up with seven points again in a 90-57 AMCC loss to Medaille (N.Y.) in Chambers Hall Saturday, adding one rebound and one block.
Spaid scored four points and pulled down three rebounds in nine minutes Dec. 23 when the Bobcats (0-5) dropped a 91-63 non-conference game to visiting Geneva.
In five games, including one start, Spaid has 24 points by shooting 8-for-18 from the field and 7-for-12 at the foul line.
He has 16 rebounds, one assist, one steal and four blocks while averaging just under 14 minutes.

DUBOIS — Freshman guard Caleb Strouse (Clearfield) made his debut with two rebounds for Penn State DuBois in a 115-74 loss to three-time Pennsylvania Sate University Athletic Conference champion York in the Multipurpose Building Gym Saturday.
The Lions, 5-3 overall, are locked in a three-way tie for second place at 2-1 behind co-leaders Penn State York and Penn State Greater Allegheny, both 3-0.

WOMEN’S INDOOR TRACK & FIELD
LEWISBURG — Sophomore Sarah Lash (Clearfield) broke one personal record and established another for St. Francis at the Bison Opener in Bucknell’s Gerhard Fieldhouse Saturday.
She placed seventh among the NCAA Division I entries in the weight throw with a heave of 9.94 meters (32 feet, 7½ inches) that easily bettered her freshman standard and eighth in her first shot put event with a toss of 9 meters (29-6½).
Senior distance runner Rebecca Johnson (Curwensville) will be seeking her fourth letter for the Red Flash, having competed at 800, 1,000 and 3,000 meters as well as in the mile in her first three seasons.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — Clarion senior Jessica Shomo (Clearfield) finished sixth in the long jump with a leap of 5.27 meters (27 feet, 3½ inches) at Youngstown State’s season-opening Icebreaker Invitational at the Watson and Tressel Training Site (WATTS) Friday.
On the track, she placed 13th in the 60-meter dash with an 8.03-second effort and 32nd in the 200 in 27.58 seconds.
Her personal indoor records are 7.87 seconds for the 60, 27.8 for the 200, 3:11.10 for the 800, 10.60 for the 60 hurdles, 5.41 meters for the long jump, 1.36 for the high jump, 10.05 for the triple jump, 7.54 for the shot put and 2,216 points for the pentathlon.

WOMEN’S SWIMMING
HUNTINGDON, W.Va. — Freshman Claire Mikesell (Clearfield) earned her highest finish of the season with a second in the 100-yard breaststroke for Ohio University in a 173-127 non-conference loss to host Marshall Friday.
She touched the wall in 1:06.60.
Mikesell also placed sixth in the 100 free in 54.69 seconds and swam the second leg for the Bobcats’ 200 free relay ‘B’ foursome that finished fourth in 1:39.95.
The Bobcats are 1-3 with a 0-2 start in the Mid-American Conference.
