Campus Corner: Safety Highlights Kovalick’s Seven-Tackle Effort; Jacobson Involved in Six Stops in First Start

WILLIAMSPORT — Sophomore linebacker Nick Kovalick (Clearfield) blew up a reverse in the end zone for a safety on King’s first offensive play and Lycoming went on to build a 16-7 lead in the second quarter, but the visitors scored the next 27 points to prevail 41-28 in their Middle Atlantic Conference opener that attracted 1,678 fans to David Person Field Saturday afternoon.

Kovalick made four more solo tackles and two assists to share top honors for the Warrior defense.

He had a pair of tackles for losses of eight yards and leads the team in that department with three while being tied for the lead in total stops with 12.

Junior Brad Stubbs (Curwensville) made his second start at center for the Lycoming (1-1) offense that racked up 432 yards.

BEAVER FALLS — Junior Austin Jacobson (Curwensville) was one of Geneva’s standouts on defense in his first collegiate start Saturday night as the Golden Tornadoes shut out Bethany 21-0 in front of 1,700 fans who had to wait out a lightning delay at Reeves Field.

Jacobson, who got the nod at strong safety, made four solo tackles, one for a one-yard loss, and assisted on two other stops. He also broke up one Bison pass.

Geneva’s ’D’ held the visitors to 216 total yards in the non-conference game.

Jacobson had four stops in the 1-1 Golden Tornadoes’ season opener.

WORCESTER, Mass. — Sophomore placekicker/punter Spencer Herrington (Clearfield) booted his first extra point for Worcester (Mass.) Polytechnic Institute following the Engineers’ fourth-quarter touchdown that punctuated a 41-7 win over Worcester State in Alumni Stadium Friday night.

A crowd of 2392 saw the Engineers raise their record to 2-0.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

CLARION — Versatile junior Carlee Freeberg (Clearfield) made starts on defense and offense as the Clarion Golden Eagles registered their first win of the season and also played to a tie in three games last week.

She started on defense in a 2-0 shutout of Pitt-Johnstown Wednesday night, recording one shot on goal, and as a midfielder in the double-overtime 0-0 stalemate with California Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action at Memorial Stadium.

Freeberg was a midfield starter again Sunday when Clarion (1-3-1, 1-2-1 PSAC) went on the road and were dealt a 4-0 non-conference setback by No. 23-ranked Ashland (Ohio).

Freeberg has logged one assist.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Sophomore forward/midfielder Heather Thorp (Curwensville) made her fourth appearance for St. Francis Sunday afternoon and played 13:45 in the second half of the Red Flash’s 7-0 non-conference loss to No. 24-ranked Loyola-Marymount.

The Red Flash (1-7) suffered a tough 1-0 loss to undefeated California-Santa Barbara Friday night in the first game of their short trip to the West Coast.

NAPERVILLE, Ill. — Junior midfielder McKenna Aleksivich (Clearfield) and sophomore midfielder Tessa Munshower (Clearfield) came off the bench in the first half to play 29:57 for Penn State Behrend in a 5-2 non-conference victory over North Central Sunday afternoon.

Munshower also saw action and got off one shot Friday night when the Lions dropped a 2-1 non-conference road game against Elmhurst (Ill.).

Munshower has two shots in three outings for the Lions, who are 2-2.
