Obama to announce $90 million package to clear Laos’ unexploded bombs

A $90 million package to clear tens of millions of unexploded US bombs in Laos is expected to be announced by President Barack Obama during his visit this week, senior administration officials tell CNN.

The package will include funding to remove the bombs as well as locate where the deadly explosives remain across the country.

An estimated 80 million cluster bombs were left unexploded in Laos after the US bombing campaign more than 40 years ago, as part of the Vietnam War.

His visit is the first trip ever by a sitting United States president to Laos.

More to come.
