Programs Announced at Parker Dam

PENFIELD – Members of the staff at the Parker Dam State Park have announced the program schedule for September.

Friday, Sept. 9

Nature Nut—Mushrooms:

8 p.m. – Campground Amphitheater

Come and learn about the large variety of mushrooms that are found in the natural world.  To identify them, you must know their physical attributes; and the Nature Nut will teach you all about them.  This is a great introduction to mushrooms and their world that awaits you.

Saturday, Sept. 10

Mushrooms in PA – Guest: Karen Croyle, Central PA Mushroom Club

3 p.m. – Environmental Education Classroom

There is a large diversity of fungi that can be seen growing in our yards and forests.  Fungi are interesting organisms that play a huge role in most ecosystems, including forests.  Come for the discussion about mushrooms and the methods you can use to identify them.  Then take a walk in the park to discover many types of fungi found here.

Mountain Pie Cook-off and Event Cache

5:30 p.m. – Campground Amphitheater

Anyone wishing to be part of the cook-off needs to bring their own ingredients and pie irons, although there will be extra pie irons available.  Those entering should make sure to bring enough ingredients to make a sample for the judges and some for those attending to try.  Bragging rights go to the winner.

Making Cordage

8 p.m. – Campground Amphitheater

As a survival skill, making cordage could come in very handy if you needed it.  Come learn what it is, how to do it, and why it could help you out of a bad situation.

Friday Sept. 16

Dangerous Invasions:

8 p.m. – Campground Amphitheater

Some people believe that there are aliens out there.  Well, there definitely are… just perhaps not the type of alien that you typically think of.  Alien plants, native to other parts of the world, are causing tremendous destruction to native plant communities and the biodiversity of the landscape.  Learn more about this very real environmental catastrophe and what you can do to help prevent the spread of invasives.

Saturday, Sept. 17

A Duck-umentary:

8 p.m. – Campground Amphitheater

This duck-umentary will take you into the lives of some of the more than 120 species of ducks.  Ducks have a talent for survival and are a fantastic family of birds, each a true original.  This is the time of year that many of them will be making long journeys to their wintering grounds, so what a great time to learn more about the ducks you may see through the migration.
