Poll: Americans favor Clinton over Trump on handling terrorism

Americans trust Hillary Clinton over Donald Trump to handle terrorism, according to a new poll released Tuesday.

The ABC News/Washington Post poll shows that Clinton leads Trump 50% to 39% on who would best handle terrorism, and those surveyed believe she responded better than Trump to the Orlando shooting, 46%-28%, respectively.

Those surveyed also believe presumptive Democratic presidential nominee showed better temperament than her Republican counterpart in response to the attack, 59% to 25%, respectively. Clinton is also favored in confidence that she can handle a similar attack as president compared with Trump (53% to 34%) and that she has better proposals for preventing future attacks (44% to 35%).

The poll reveals that Clinton has solid trust on the issue of handling terrorism among those who preferred Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders for the Democratic nomination, white men and white Catholics, as well as among Democrats in general.

Additionally, the poll shows that 52% of those surveyed oppose Trump’s proposal to temporarily ban Muslims from entering the United States, while 42% support it.

And 48% of people surveyed believe that “leaders should say terror attacks are caused by radical Islam because this accurately identifies the cause,” while 40% say “leaders should not use the phrase radical Islam because it lends legitimacy to terrorists by falsely suggesting that their actions are supported by Islamic teachings.”

The poll was conducted June 20-23 among 1,001 adults and had a margin of error of plus-or-minus 3.5 points.
