STATE COLLEGE — The Clearfield American Legion Post 6 baseball team was held to five hits by three State College pitchers in a 6-0 Central Penn League loss Tuesday evening.
Wyatt Porter had two singles and Ty Bender doubled for the Chiefs, who dipped to 3-4.
Three errors factored into all of the runs off Bryce Timko, who gave up five hits and two walks and also hit one batter in 3-1/3 innings.
Reliever Justin Fedder allowed only one hit in 2-2/3 innings.
A two-out miscue cost Timko three runs in the first inning when Tucker Treibold followed with a two-run single.
Those were all winner Zach Ripka needed as he surrendered three hits, all in the second frame, while fanning three and walking two in a five-inning stint.
Adam Tussey and Sam Plafcan each pitched one inning to complete the shutout that gave State College (6-1) a share of first place with Beech Creek.
Matt Tomczuk had four of State College’s six hits, one a double.
Clearfield will open the 35th annual Bellefonte Bandits Wood Bat Tournament with two games at Governors Park Friday.
The Chiefs are paired against Clarence at 12:30 p.m. in a game that also will count in the CPL and against TBW Select of Maryland at 3 o’clock.
They will play St. Mary’s (Md.) Legion Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
All four teams will return to Governors Park Sunday for the semifinals at 9 and 11 a.m., with the winners moving to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on the Penn State campus for the championship game at 2 p.m.
