Netflix lands ‘The Office’ movie spinoff

‘The Office’ fans can rejoice! Ricky Gervais, the creator of the popular UK and U.S. television series, announced that Netflix has just bought the rights to his ‘Office’ movie spinoff, “David Brent: Life On The Road.”

“This is exciting news and this is top secret, so I’m going to say it now,” Gervais revealed on SiriusXM’s “Opie with Jim Norton Show” yesterday. “Netflix has bought out the rest of the world again. Everyone is going to see it, which is great for me, because I’d rather 20 million people see it than half a million people see it in cinemas … because I want to do tours off the back of it.”

Gervais played David Brent on the popular UK version of the show that aired on the BBC from 2001 to 2003. The spinoff will follow Brent as he pursues his life-long dream, to become a rockstar. The movie is expected to be filmed in the show’s signature mockumentary style. No word whether there will be any crossover with characters from the U.S. version of the show, starring Steve Carell as Michael Scott. But there is a strong chance considering Brent appeared occasionally on the U.S. version, which aired on NBC from 2005 to 2013.

The film will hit theaters in the U.K. on Aug. 19 before heading to Netflix.
