MAHAFFEY – Recently there was a small-town gathering at the Mahaffey Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8709 to honor the memory of veteran and member Bruce Gleason.
The veterans and members of the post commissioned local artist, Cora Smith, to paint a mural inspired by a flag donated by Gleason, who is now deceased.
The leadership of this local VFW has been working hard to refresh the post and in doing so have added art and inspiration to the community.
This mural and also a flag mural on the front of the building were painted this summer.
The family of Gleason attended the gathering, along with a small group of local residents.
Pictured at the VFW Mahaffey Sgt. Bruce Gleason mural dedication are: Clara Witherow, sister; Lou Gleason, brother; Cora Smith, artist; Roger Poeta, post commander; Tom Robinson, quartermaster; Dan Lee Jr. vice commander; Jackie Jenkins, Stewart; Jullian Witherow, nephew; and Melisa Brooks, cousin.
