Lady Bison Shortstop Cline Earns All-Mountain League Honor; Redden, Bishop Selected to Second Team

CLEARFIELD — Clearfield Area High School sophomore Brooke Cline was among the three infielders selected for the 2016 Mountain League Softball All-Star First Team, and teammates Raeleigh Redden and Aspen Bishop received recognition on the second team.

Only league statistics were factored into voting by the eight head coaches.

Cline, a second-team selection last year, was 16-for-43 in 14 games for a .372 average. The Lady Bison’s leadoff batter scored nine runs and had four stolen bases in five attempts.

Cline topped the Lady Bison in hits (18), average (.389), runs (12) and stolen bases (9-for-10). She also had three doubles and drove in four runs.

Redden (3-7) pitched in 11 league games with 10 starts and four complete games. The senior right-hander worked 48 innings with a 4.08 earned run average, 40 strikeouts and 18 walks.

Her overall totals were much better, including an 8-10 record and a 2.53 ERA for 103.2 innings. She completed 12 of 18 starts with 74 strikeouts and 33 walks.

Bishop, a sophomore outfielder with the majority of her starts in left field, hit .268 (11-for-41) with 10 RBIs in ML action. She had three doubles and one triple.

For the season, Bishop was second on the team in hits with 19 for a .284 average and had team-highs in doubles with eight and RBIs with 16. She tied for second in runs scored with 10.

Clearfield wound up 4-10 in the league and finished 9-13, losing 1-0 to Punxsutawney in the District 9 Class AAA championship game after edging St. Marys 6-5 for their first playoff win since 2007.

Philipsburg-Osceola infielder Haylee Hayward was named to the first team for the third year in a row. She was on the second team as a freshman.

Earning first-team laurels for the second time were Bald Eagle Area catcher Morgan Nyman and outfielder Dallis Dillon and Philipsburg-Osceola first baseman Maggie Peck, who was a first-team pitcher as well as a second-team offensive pitcher in 2015.

Moving up from last year’s second team were Bellefonte pitcher Tara Baney and Philipsburg-Osceola outfielder. Both also were 2014 all-stars, Baney as the designated player and Henry as a pitcher.
