Paul Manafort named campaign chairman, chief strategist for Donald Trump

Paul Manafort has been named campaign chairman and chief strategist for the Donald Trump campaign, spokesperson Hope Hicks said Thursday.

The new role was first reported this afternoon by ABC News.

A campaign adviser told CNN the move is to help clarify roles within the organization.

Corey Lewandowski, the campaign manager, is close to Trump and will travel with him. The adviser says Manafort in this new role will help the establishment feel more “comfortable” in getting behind Trump.

Part of the issue with the campaign, this adviser said, is that there’s not a clear system within the campaign for hiring aides. This adviser hopes this move will help clear up that kind of nuts and bolts confusion.

“Corey Lewandowski will continue overseeing day to day operations and will work with Manafort on political strategy and communications, among other things, through the general election,” Hicks said.
