ST. MARY’S — The final week of baseball kicked off for the Curwensville Golden Tide with a Monday afternoon trip to St. Mary’s. The opposition for their next-to-last road game of the year came from the Elk County Catholic Crusaders.
The game was close for the duration, with both teams finding success on the mound, neither gaining much of an advantage. It was one inning that made the difference.
Two hits in the fourth inning proved to be enough for the Crusaders. Despite committing four errors, Elk County Catholic captured the 2-0 shut out win over Curwensville.
Both teams were dealing on the mound. Combined, the three pitchers from both teams only yielded one walk, showing how challenging both teams were on this occasion. The Crusaders would elect to send Anthony Dattoli to the mound for this game, and he would not disappoint. His victory came thanks to a complete game effort where he yielding just four hits, and would strike out nine of 28 batters that he faced.
Curwensville chose to bring Austin Lansberry to the hill, and even in a losing effort, he had a strong game. In four innings, he would yield only six hits while striking out three.
The lone inning where the Tide faltered and gave up the only two runs in the contest came in the fourth.
A pair of RBI-singles coming from Ryan Heary and Gabe Kraus were what put Elk County Catholic on the scoreboard, and would be enough to hold over the final three innings. Bryce Timko came into pitch beginning in the fifth inning, and he would deal a strong effort, yielding only one hit over his two innings and striking out one. Unfortunately, Curwensville’s offense would not gain anything more in their final three trips to the plate.
The Tide (6-12) return home for their final home contest of the season on Tuesday for a 4:15 p.m. start against Brockway.
