CURWENSVILLE – The Clearfield High School girls softball team won its second straight game on Thursday afternoon in Curwensville, defeating the rival Lady Tide 3-1.
The game’s hero was Lady Bison sophomore Erica Hanes who hit a one out pinch-hit double in the top half of the sixth inning to push the two winning runs home.
Curwensville scored the first run, and its only run, of the contest in the bottom half of he first when Hannah Dixon singled to left field to lead off.
Pitcher Rylee Young followed with a single that moved Dixon to second base and then Kaylee Harnett hit into a fielder’s choice with Dixon later scoring on the play on a throwing error by Clearfield.
The Lady Bison tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth inning, started with a walk to lead off hitter Abby Fedder.
Lindsay Hand came in as a pinch runner for Fedder and promptly stole second base then moved to third base as the throw to second skipped into centerfield.
With two outs Makayla Ross singled to left center that brought home the tying run for the Lady Bison.
In the Clearfield half of the sixth Aspen Bishop and Fedder lead off with back to back singles.
Nikki Brossard, with a perfect sacrifice bunt, moved Bishop to third and Fedder to second. Both would score on the pinch hit double by Hanes that led to the Clearfield victory.
The Lady Tide stranded 10 base runners, including the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth. They also left two on base in the first, third and sixth innings.
Fedder paced the Clearfield offense with two hits.
Raeliegh Redden, senior pitcher for the Lady Bison, went the distance for her fourth win of the year, scattering seven Curwensville singles.
Lady Bison head coach Bob Lewis said afterwards, “I thought the win this afternoon was very good for us. We expected a tough game from Curwensville, and it was. I was pretty proud of our solid pitching, clutch hitting along with a very solid defense.”
For Curwensville head coach Allen Leigey it was a tough loss, but he liked how his team performed, saying, “I told the girls going in we wanted to compete and be in the game every pitch and every inning. I knew we had to be focused every second and for the most part we were. So I am very satisfied with our effort this afternoon.“
The Lady Bison, now 5-7, are at home on Friday, playing Bald Eagle Area, a team that beat Clearfield earlier this season 11-1 on the Lady Eagles’ home field.
Curwensville, now at 8-5, will be traveling to DuBois on Saturday to go up against DuBois Central Catholic at 3 pm. The game is a make-up from the April 29 postponement due to the weather.
