Orsich’s Shutout Keeps Bison in ML Title Hunt

TYRONE — The Clearfield Area High School baseball team remained in the thick of the Mountain League title chase with senior ace Brandon Orsich shutting out Tyrone 7-0 in a makeup game Saturday afternoon.

The Bison pulled away with three runs in the sixth inning and two more in the seven to improve their record to 5-3 in the league and 6-4 at the halfway mark of the season.

They backed Orsich with flawless defense and an 11-hit attack led by Jon Trimpey, Zane Morgan and Marcus Luzier.

Trimpey singled three times, doubling his season hit total, and scored two runs, Morgan tripled and scored in the first inning and socked a two-run double in the sixth and Luzier had a pair of singles, one RBI and one run scored.

“Zane and Jon had big days at the plate,” Clearfield coach Sid Lansberry said. “We were slow getting started, but Brandon was very efficient. He was in command the whole game.”

Orsich was superb again in lowering his earned run average to 1.00 while notching his fourth win in five decisions with only 68 pitches.

The right-hander fanned seven Golden Eagles in padding his strikeout-walk ratio to 37-2.

Orsich faced the minimum 18 batters through six innings by picking off Matt Brenneman after he singled to lead off the third frame,

Gary Weaver and Brian Gunter opened the Tyrone seventh with hits, but Orsich wrapped up his fifth complete game by retiring the next three batters.

Morgan’s triple and Orsich’s groundout put the Bison up 1-0 in the first inning, and it stayed that way until Trimpey singled and scored on an error in the fourth,

Clearfield broke it open in the sixth with an RBI single by Justin Fedder preceding Morgan’s two-run double.

In the seventh, Ty Bender doubled and scored on an error before Luzier’s single plated Trimpey.

The Bison will play two very important road games next week, taking on Huntingdon Tuesday and Bellefonte Friday.

In the junior varsity game, Ethan McGinnis drove in five runs with two doubles and a single while Wyatt Porter also had three hits and was the winning pitcher for Clearfield in an 18-6 rout. Alex Coval and Eli Glass added two singles apiece.
