Bison Track Teams Compete at LHU Invitational; Collins Wins Discus Event

LOCK HAVEN — The Clearfield Boys and Girls Track and Field teams competed at that LHU Bald Eagle Invitational on Friday night.

Both teams had a lot of success against some of the state’s best competition. Matt Collins rose to the challenge to capture the discus championship with a throw of 153 ft 11 in.  Bison Field Coach Andrew Shimko said that “Matt was consistently over 140 feet for the night and was one of the more consistent nights of his career.”

Mason Royer was able to battle his way back into the championship heat to come away with a second place for the night.  Bison Head Coach John Jacob stated that, “I think Mason can get back to championship form within the next couple of meets. He just needs to clean up a few minor things in the hurdles.”

Bront Strickland had a good night by placing sixth in the 400 meter dash and just missing a top-8 finish in the 200 meters.

Both Strickland and Royer led their relay teams to some impressive times.  In the 4×100 relay the team of Royer, Strickland, JT Swales and Seth Caldwell ran their best time of 45.89 and a top-6 finish.  That relay team is starting to take shape and could contend for a district title.

Not to be outdone the 4×800 realy of Kyle Biancuzzo, Ryan Chew, Aaron Aycock and Peyton Priester were able to come away with their best time of the year and an eighth place finish.

The boys team was in the top five in points for a majority of the night but slipped to eighth over the last two events.  It was Clearfield’s best finish as a team at such a large invitational.

Some of the younger kids had good nights. Biancuzzo and Jeremiah Vezza both came away with personal records in the 1600 and 3200. They pulled off an impressive double performance in these two distance events.  Also setting a personal record was Chew in the 1600 meter run.

On the girls side the night’s top performer was Denise Stephens in the shot put. She threw 33 ‘ 11″ in to claim third place.  Next was Rachel Glenny, who was able to hold on and finish fifth in the 300 meter hurdles.

Katrina Spencer, Madison Jones, Nikol Chew and Macy Forrest combined with Glenny in the relays and had a good night.  There was a mixup in the 4×100 time that did not get corrected that would have place them higher and their 4×400 relay time was their best of the year as they were able to win their heat by almost 10 seconds.

The young girls distance squad was able to come away with some impressive times. Jaclyn Freeman was able to break six minutes in the 1600 and come away with a personal record in the 3200.  Freshman Ashley Struble won her heat of the 1600 and set a personal record.

The Bisons host the Mountain League Championship Meet on Wednesday.
