WESTOVER – Improving to 5-1 on the 2016 season, the Curwensville Lady Tide softball team took nine innings to defeat host Harmony Monday afternoon in Westover, 4-1, in its first Moshannon Valley League (MVL) game of the year.
The Lady Owls broke open a scoreless battle with a lone run in the bottom of the sixth inning, taking a 1-0 lead into the final inning behind junior pitcher Tarra Hauser.
Curwensville sent the game into extra innings with a run in the top half of the seventh inning when, with one out, Emily Miller was hit by a pitch and was pinch run for by Olivia McGarry.
Kaylee Sedgwick followed with a single giving the Lady Tide runners at first and second.
McGarry then scored the tying run on an error by the Lady Owls, moving the contest into overtime.
The Lady Tide won the game by tallying three runs in the top of the ninth.
Miller led off with a double, and once again Olivia McGarry came on to pinch run.
McGarry would score her second run of the game when Sedgwick stroked another single, giving the Tide a 2-1 margin.
Lady Tide second baseman Teghan Jacobson walked giving Curwensville runners at first and second base, still with no outs.
Mackenzie Anderson singled to right field to bring Jacobson home stretching the Tide lead to 3-1.
Later in the inning Curwensville pitcher Rylee Young smacked a single that plated Jacobson with the game’s final score.
Sedgwick paced the Lady Tide offense with two hits, while Hauser did the same for the Lady Owls, with one being a triple.
Young improved to 5-1 on the year from the circle and in 44 innings pitched thus far in 2016 has walked just two batters, in game one, and those were both intentional base on balls.
It was a tough loss for Hauser who gave up six hits, while striking out 17 Lady Tide. The one issue that didn’t help was that Hauser walked six and had one hit batsman.
The Lady Tide play at home on Tuesday, at 4:15 pm, against the Glendale Lady Vikings in another Moshannon Valley League contest.
