CURWENSVILLE — Rylee Young authored a two-hitter with 12 strikeouts and collected three of Curwensville’s 11 hits as the Lady Tide made Kane’s stay at Riverside Field a short one with a 10-0 Mercy Rule win in Northern Allegany Small School South Division softball action Thursday afternoon.
Emily Miller also had three hits and drove in three runs, Kayley Harnett had a pair of singles and Hayley McGarry matched Young’s two RBIs for the Lady Tide, who were coming off their first loss, 4-2, at Purchase Line Wednesday.
“It was a good bounceback game,” Curwensville coach Allen Leigey said. “We played good last night, we just didn’t get the clutch hit. We left 11 on.”
That wasn’t the case in the Lady Tide’s third league victory without a loss.
Young and Miller delivered RBI singles in the Lady Tide’s three-run first inning, and both came through with runners in scoring position again in the second frame.
Young drove in one run and Miller capped the four-run salvo with two more RBIs.
Curwensville (4-1) set up the early finish with three more runs in the fourth inning. Young led off with a double and scored on an error. Harnett reached second on the play and stepped on home plate for the third time on a hit by McGarry, who later scored on another Kane (0-4) miscue.
Miller and Harnett have hit safely in every game.
“Miller has done really well in that DP spot,” Leigey said. “She likes to hit, and it’s hard to find girls who want to do just that.
“Harnett makes us go. She’s had five hits the last two nights.”
Leigey also noted Young’s contributions as the No. 2 batter as well as in the circle.
“She’s by far my best bunter and usually gives us one or two hits a game,” he said.
The senior hurler did not allow a walk in her sparkling pitching performance.
“She’s pretty good and gives us a chance to win all the time,” Leigey said. “She is consistent and she’s real reliable. She has good movement on her pitches and is starting to become a strikeout pitcher.”
“Her big thing is she’s not gonna walk you. She’s walked two batters all year, and those were intentional.”
The Lady Tide get their first Moshannon Valley League tests at Harmony Monday and at home against Glendale Tuesday.
