BEA Short-Circuits Bison’s Fast Start in ML, 2-1

HYDE — Bald Eagle Area’s A.J. Onder outdueled Clearfield’s Brandon Orsich for a 2-1 victory in a quick, errorless Mountain League schoolboy baseball game at the Bison Sports Complex Wednesday afternoon.

The senior right-handers matched five-hitters, with the edge going to Onder when Ryan Guenot and Noah Chambers drove in the Eagles’ runs with two-out, line-drive singles in the third inning.

Orsich, who registered seven strikeouts and had four 1-2-3 innings, allowed only two other Eagles to reach base. Tanner Kresovich was hit by a pitch in the fourth inning, and Onder singled in the sixth.

“Brandon certainly pitched well enough to win,” Clearfield coach Sid Lansberry said. “He had good stuff except for that one inning.”

Onder was even stingier in his first trip to the mound this season, striking out two and walking one in getting the Eagles back to .500 at 2-2.

“He kept us off balance,” Lansberry said. “He had a good off-speed pitch, and we were out on our front foot for sure. We also swung at too many first pitches. We’ve gotta be more patient.”

The tough setback prevented the Bison from regaining a share of the league lead with Philipsburg-Osceola as they slipped to 3-1.

“This one’s on the offense,” Lansberry said. “I said earlier that we’ve got to generate more offense, and we really haven’t done that.”

Four of the Bison baserunners left on base were in scoring position.

“We just didn’t get any clutch hits,” Lansberry said.

Clearfield’s run resulted from a Marcus Luzier groundout after Jake Sorbera and Justin Fedder had rolled singles through the left side to begin the bottom of the third inning and moved up a base on Zane Morgan’s sacrifice bunt.

After that, the Bison went down in order on groundouts, popups or flyouts except for the sixth frame.

Morgan walked on four pitches and Luzier looped a single to short center, but Onder reached back to induce an infield fly and two routine fly balls to center.

The Bison, 3-2 overall, will try to get back on the winning track Friday when they take on Penns Valley at Spring Mills.
