HUNTINGDON — After scoring three runs in the top of the fifth inning, the Clearfield Area High School softball team was five outs away from victory Thursday, but Huntingdon came back to pull out a 4-3 squeaker in Mountain League action.
The Lady Bearcats drew even with two runs in the sixth inning on singles by Brooke Shuck and Leah Read and a double by Hannah Coffman.
Then, in the bottom of the seventh, Hannah Varner tripled with one out and dashed to the plate on pitcher Catherine Miller’s grounder to hand the Lady Bison their second loss.
Miller fired a four-hitter with 11 strikeouts and three walks, setting the Lady Bison down in order five times.
Clearfield finally got to her for three of their hits in the fifth inning to grab a 3-1 lead.
With two outs and pinch-runner Karlie Lewis aboard, No. 9 batter Aspen Bishop delivered her second hit, Brooke Cline singled to knot the score and Molly Sartin came through with a clutch, two-run single.
Raeleigh Redden registered three of her seven strikeouts in the last two frames but couldn’t prevent the Lady Bearcats (1-1) from rallying.
The Lady Bison hurler gave up six hits and two walks.
She would have been working on a two-hit shutout after five innings except for a two-out miscue that gave Huntingdon a run in the fourth.
Clearfield will travel down I-80 Tuesday to test Bellefonte.
