Campus Corner: Vanderburgh Extends Hitting Streak

SOFTBALL

WINCHESTER, Va. — Sophomore shortstop Megan Vanderburgh (Clearfield) collected three hits, drove in three runs and scored three times as Shenandoah opened Old Dominion Athletic Conference play by splitting doubleheaders with Bridgewater and Randolph-Macon at Henkel-Harris Field last week.

She stretched her career-high hitting streak to six games with a two-run single and a stolen base in a 7-6 loss to Bridgewater, an RBI single in an 11-3 victory over the Eagles and a single in a 10-8 win over Randolph-Macon.

Though her streak ended in an 8-0 nightcap loss Friday, Vanderburgh owns a season-high .255 batting average on 14 hits. She is second on the team in runs scored with 12 to go with six RBIs and two stolen bases.

Shenandoah is 8-10 overall.

BLOOMSBURG — Sophomore Rachel Hoffman (Clearfield) had hits in three of Clarion’s four games but was tagged with two losses last week.

The right-hander kept the Golden Eagles in their Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Central Division lidlifter at Bloomsburg Thursday, striking out eight while allowing four runs, two earned, on seven hits in five innings. She walked one batter and hit one in the 4-1 setback.

Clarion (3-14) dropped its ninth game in a row, 9-0, in the nightcap but bounced back with a 6-2 win at Pitt-Johnstown Saturday.

In the second game against her former teammates, Hoffman lasted only 2.2 innings in the shortest of her seven starts. She gave up six hits and nine runs, seven earned, with one strikeout and three walks.

Redshirt freshman Tierra Shope (Curwensville) pinch-ran and scored a run in the 12-9 setback.

Bloomsburg (4-0) and UPJ (3-1) sit atop the PSAC-Central Division.

Hoffman is 2-6 with three complete games in eight appearances. She has worked 38.1 innings with 32 strikeouts, 18 walks and four hit batsman while surrendering 38 hits and 34 runs, 28 earned for a 5.11 earned run average. She tops the pitching staff in appearances, starts, complete games, innings worked and strikeouts.

Hoffman is hitting .261 with a team-high six doubles and one of the Golden Eagles’ two triples among her 12 hits. She has driven in three runs.

Shope has played in 10 games, including three starts.

BASEBALL

ALFRED, N.Y. — Freshman catcher Josh Sorbera (Clearfield) made his first start behind the plate and registered his first run batted in with a third-inning single as Penn State DuBois completed a non-league sweep of Alfred State via a 7-2 win at Pioneer Park Saturday.

Sorbera, who did not play in the 3-2 opener, has two hits and a .286 batting average in five appearances for the 2-6 Lions.

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. — Freshman pitcher/outfielder Thomas Summers (Clearfield) had hits in two of Maryland-Eastern Shore’s three games against defending Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference North Division champion at Hawk Stadium over the weekend.

Summers made two starts as the designated hitter and one in right field for the Hawks, who lost 11-2, 20-7 and 7-6 in eight innings to dip to 1-4 in the MEAC and 5-17 for the season.

In the finale, Summers relieved after Norfolk State had rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh to tie the score. He got the final out but was charged with the loss when he issued three walks around a hit batsman in the eighth.

The left-hander is 0-2 with a 4.70 earned run average in five appearances. He has pitched 7.2 innings and given up 10 hits, six runs and eight walks while striking out four.

Summer has 29 official at-bats in 11 games with five hits, including two doubles and a home run, for a .192 average. He has driven in two runs.

ALTOONA — Sophomore infielder Jarrett Fulmer (Clearfield) drew a walk and was hit by a pitch in four trips to the plate while junior pitcher Kurtis Krise (Clearfield) made his fourth appearance on the mound for Penn State Altoona last week.

Krise pitched the final inning of Saturday’s 10-0 loss to Gettysburg and struck out two batters but gave up three unearned runs on three hits.

Fulmer has four hits for a .121 average with two RBIs in 14 games, including 11 starts.

Krise (0-1) has pitched eight innings with an 11.25 ERA.

BLOOMSBURG — Redshirt freshman outfielder Curtis Collins (Clearfield) made his fifth appearance for Mansfield in a pinch-hitting role against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Division rival Bloomsburg Saturday.

The Mounties (9-13) were swept by the host Huskies after splitting a doubleheader Friday and fell to 1-7 in the division.

Collins is hitless in three at-bats and has one stolen base.

WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD

CALIFORNIA — Junior Jessica Shomo (Clearfield) of Clarion placed fifth among 22 entries in the long jump at the California Early Bird Invitational in Adamson Stadium Saturday.

Her leap covered 5.08 meters (16 feet, 8 inches).

SELINSGROVE — Freshman Sarah Lash (Clearfield) made her debut in two field events for St. Francis University at the 32nd Annual Jim Taylor Invitational hosted by Susquehanna in Nicholas A. Lopardo Stadium Saturday.

She wound up 15th in the javelin throw with a toss of 33.63 meters (110 feet, 4 inches) and 26th in the hammer throw with a heave of 27.69 meters (90 feet, 10 inches).

Each event attracted 32 throwers.
