Lady Tide Open 2016 Softball Season With 3-1 Victory over Clarion

CURWENSVILLE – The 2016 softball season for the Curwensville Lady Tide opened under sunny skies and temperatures well above average for this time of year.

Not only was the weather terrific for this early season opener, but results for the Lady Tide were also bright, sunny and warm as Curwensville knocked off visiting Clarion 3-1.

Playing without two of it’s starters, Hannah Dixon and Camryn Richards, Lady Tide head coach Allen Leigey had to do some defensive juggling which led him to say, “One of my best players in Hannah (Dixon) was out with an illness so we had to do a bunch of shuffling with our line-up this afternoon. That meant moving Harnett (Kaylee) from second base to shortstop, were she did a good job for us. And with all the other moves that needed to be made I am very proud of how this team rose to the occasion.”

Curwensville scored the game’s first runs in the bottom of the third when MacKenzie Anderson singled and Olivia McGarry then came in as a pinch runner.

Perhaps the biggest play of the game came next as Madison Bumbarger bunted back to Clarion pitcher Alexis Constantino who promptly threw over second base which led to Olivia McGarry going the distance to home plate with the game’s first run.

Bumbarger got all the way to third on the throwing error and then scored on a Rylee Young double to right center field.

The Lady Tide picked up its final tally in the bottom of the sixth as Emily Miller smacked a double with Carissa Cole then coming in to pinch run.

Cole scored on a Kaylee Sedgwick double down the left field line.

Young went the distance from the circle, surrendering just one run, in the fifth inning, while striking out seven Lady Bobcats.

Sedgwick was the only player to have multiple hits, two, on the afternoon.

Leigey then commented about how big the win was, “This is one of my five best wins here as a head coach because of all the switching we had to do on defense. I am so proud of how the girls kept their poise and confidence. It was a good game for us to start the season off with.”

The Lady Tide don’t return to the diamond again until April 4 when they have another home game, this time against Johnsonburg at 4:15 pm.
