Bison’s Myers Named Mountain League MVP, Spaid Makes First Team, Hazel on Second Unit

TYRONE — Clearfield Area High School junior Will Myers was selected Most Valuable Player of the Mountain Boys Basketball League’s 2015-16 season in voting by the head coaches.

Two other Bison were named to the league’s all-star team announced at the annual winter sports banquet in the Tyrone Area High School Monday night.

Senior Cody Spaid was tabbed for the first team, while junior Tommy Hazel landed on the second team.

All three averaged at least 11 points, 6.5 rebounds and two assists for the 23-3 Bison, who won their first league championship with a 13-1 record before repeating as District 9 Class AAA kings.

The 6-3 Myers, who set a school record with 84 three-pointers, topped the Bison in scoring with 449 points, a 17.3 average, to reach the 1,000-point plateau. He had 24 double-figure performances, including 13 games with 20 or more points.

His accuracy was outstanding from all over the floor as he made 54 percent of his two-point field goal tries, 40 percent of his three-point attempts and 79 percent of his free throws.

In addition, he averaged 6.5 rebounds and 2.7 assists.

Myers was a first-team selection last year after receiving honorable mention as a freshman.

Spaid was rewarded for being a double-double producer in the low blocks.

The 6-7 Pitt-Greensburg recruit scored 267 points (11.1 ppg) and pulled down a team-high 258 rebounds (11.2 rpg), with double-digit points in 12 of the last 15 games and 15 overall.

He shot 60 percent on two-pointers and 65 percent at the foul line.

Spaid, who averaged 2.8 blocks and 2.3 assists, moved up from last year’s honorable mention list.

So did the 6-3 Hazel after totaling 340 points, a 13.1 average, with 17 games in double figures, including six in the 20s.

He matched Myers’ long range shooting at 40 percent with 48 makes and was right behind his teammate in foul shooting at 78 percent.

Hazel grabbed 167 rebounds for a 6.7 average and chipped in 2.7 assists per game.

Joining Spaid on the all-senior first team are repeaters Anthony Politza of Tyrone and Zack Engle of Penns Valley along with Penns Valley’s Logan Pearce, a second-teamer last year, and Bald Eagle Area’s Trey Butterworth, an honorable mention pick in 2015.

Rounding out the second team are senior Ben Alexander of Penns Valley, senior Taylor Mitchell of Huntingdon and juniors Kyle Dodson and Josh McKnight of Central.

Honorable mention was accorded to Philipsburg-Osceola juniors Peyton Guelich and Josiah Davis, Bald Eagle Area junior Noah Chambers, Bellefonte senior Hunter Knisely and junior Tyler Kreger, Tyrone sophomore Jacob Meredith, Huntingdon sophomore Jonathan Price and Central senior Justin Helsel.

The 2015-16 final standings:

Clearfield 13-1, Penns Valley 11-2, Tyrone 10-3, Central 6-8, Huntingdon 6-8, Bald Eagle Area 4-10, Bellefonte 4-10, Philipsburg-Osceola 1-13.
