Iraq says plane went down in Kirkuk

An Iraqi military aircraft was downed in northeastern Kirkuk and all crew members were killed, Iraqi Joint Operations Command said in a statement Wednesday.

ISIS issued its own statement saying it shot down an Iraqi military plane with a 57mm artillery gun in Huwaija, in southeastern Kirkuk province.

All five crew members on the plane were killed, ISIS said.

The ISIS-affiliated Amaq news agency said the aircraft was a Cessna Caravan and posted a still picture purporting to show the downed plane.

A CNN military analyst, retired Col. Cedric Leighton, said the photo also appears to show an AGM-114 Hellfire missile and that the plane wreckage shows markings consistent with the Iraqi military.

The Cessna Caravan is a training plane the Iraqi government has modified to become bombers.

Iraq said it’s launched an investigation into the incident.
