Ex-South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford endorses Ted Cruz

Mark Sanford, the former governor of South Carolina who has made a political comeback to now serve the state in Congress, has endorsed Ted Cruz the day before the state’s primary.

Sanford made the announcement Friday in Charleston. He has played coy for several months about who he planned to endorse, appearing at Cruz events in South Carolina throughout the year and speaking in glowing terms but always coming short of issuing a formal endorsement.

“We need another fighter in Washington, in the Oval Office,” Sanford, a surprise guest, said at the College of Charleston.

Sanford won election back to Congress in 2013, four years after he was involved in a scandal when it surfaced that he had an extramarital affair.
