HERSHEY — The Clearfield Bison really showed their mettle in knocking off District 4 champ Jersey Shore 39-28 in first round consolation action at the PIAA AAA Team Wrestling Championships in Hershey Friday morning.
The Bison won all five of the toss-up matches, four by a single point and one in overtime, that secured the first Bison win EVER at Hershey during the state dual format, which began in 1999. 1-8 in their previous nine matches at state duals, they own a 2009 preliminary round victory at Clarion HS, the Bison (15-4) will face the loser of the Central Dauphin vs. Bethlehem Catholic quarterfinal match-up at 6:00 p.m. in the consolation quarterfinals. Currently assured of a top-12 finish, a win would put the Bison in the final-8 of the state and advance them to Saturday’s action.
The Bison had three 1-0 wins, by Hunter Blake at 126, Josiah McClarren at 132, and Travis Ogden at 220, a 3-2 win by Logan Gilbert at 138, and a 6-4 sudden victory by Levi Wisor at 195.
Jude Pallo at 113, Tallin Norris at 145, Luke McGonigal at 182, and Nate Lash at 285 had falls to give the Bison the bonus points they needed for the win. Pallo’s fall in 3:32 clinched the dual meet win after Jersey Shore had inched back to 33-22 with two bouts to go.
McGonigal’s fall in 1:32 gave Clearfield the lead back at 21-16, after Jersey Shore had run off 16 straight points after falling behind 15-0 to start the dual.
