EMPORIUM – The Curwensville Area High School got back on the winning track Thursday night with a journey to Emporium to battle Cameron County with a 59-8 victory.
Golden Tide head coach Dean Swatsworth talked afterwards about the win, “I thought we wrestled hard tonight. We tried to get the match ups we wanted to make it a good match, and we did. I know they didn’t have a lot of kids and we knew that going into the match tonight, but we had some good match ups and again, I thought we wrestled well.”
The Tide came up with five pins, four forfeits and one technical fall to get the convincing win over the Red Raiders.
Picking up falls for Curwensville were Eli Jacobs at 160 pounds, Ben Junod at 170, Hunter Lancaster at 182, Blake Passarelli at 113 and Dylan Meyers wrestling at 126.
Passarelli, a freshman for the Golden Tide, improved to 22-5 on the season.
Curwensville also got a technical fall at 195 as Jeff Harvey won his match 17-2, which was stopped with 30 seconds left in the third period.
Harvey’s win naturally caught Swatsworth’s attention, as the Tide mentor commented, “I was happy to see Jeffrey come up with a win tonight. He puts a lot of time in and it’s nice to see it pay off for him.”
In the junior high match the Golden Tide also won, 54-18, over Cameron County.
The Golden Tide, (6-11), will wrestle again on Friday, traveling to Flinton, to match up against the Glendale Vikings. The junior high wrestling match will start at 6 pm with the varsity battle to immediately follow.
The match is re-scheduled from the January 22 postponement due to the inclement weather.
Swatsworth then briefly talked about the upcoming Glendale match, saying, “We have to turn around and go to Glendale tomorrow (Friday) so I hope this momentum carries over for us.”
