CURWENSVILLE – The Curwensville girls basketball squad picked up its second victory of the season with a 43-21 conquest of visiting Sheffield Tuesday night at Patton Hall, home of the Lady Tide.
Curwensville head coach Eric Duriancik was happy for his girls, saying after the game, “It feels really good for the kids for sure. I saw a lot of good things out there tonight that helped us pick up the win.”
The Lady Tide started out on an 11-0 first quarter run thanks to eight points by junior Hannah Dixon before the Lady Wolverines hit a free throw with 14 seconds left in the first.
Taking an 11-4 margin into the second eight minutes, Curwensville pounded Sheffield with a 16-1 quarter to hold a commanding 27-5 halftime bulge.
Senior Shauna Guy and junior Christene Limbert each had six tallies in the second frame.
The second 16 minutes actually was a draw, 16-16, but the first half effort by the Lady Tide was enough to garner the win.
Sheffield is now winless on the 2015-16 season at 0-20.
Leading the Lady Tide offense was Dixon with 16 points while Limbert and Guy each added eight.
Mya Grubbs was high scorer for the Lady Wolverines with five tallies.
Both teams struggled from the free throw line with Curwensville hitting 11 of 25 and Sheffield six of 16.
Duriancik talked about what his team needs to do over the final five games, commenting, “We need to be more consistent if anything else. We’re always trying to get better right now for the next game in front of us.”
There was no junior varsity game.
The Lady Tide (2-15) are at Clearfield Thursday night to battle the Lady Bison with JV action starting at 6 pm and the varsity game to immediately follow.
