Chinese man accused of killing nephews arrested in Hong Kong

A Chinese man arrested by Hong Kong police as he arrived on a flight from Los Angeles on Saturday night is due to appear in court on Monday.

Deyun Shi is suspected of beating his two teenage nephews to death in Arcadia, Los Angeles, on Friday, and attempting to kill his wife the day before.

Shi was detained in Hong Kong shortly after the flight arrived, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s department.

Hong Kong police said they were acting upon a formal extradition request from U.S. authorities. It’s believed Shi was attempting to reach China, which doesn’t have an extradition treaty with the U.S.

The bodies of the two boys were found just after midday on Friday. They were named as William and Anthony Lin, in a statement by the Arcadia Unified School District.

“We are beyond saddened to learn of the death of the Lin brothers, William and Anthony, who attended Arcadia High School,” the statement said.

A vigil is being held for the two students on Monday.

“While this tragedy did not happen on campus, it will undoubtedly have an enormous impact throughout all our schools,” the statement said.

Students returning to school this week would be offered extra counseling, it added.
