12 suspected drug smugglers killed on Jordan’s border

Twelve suspected drug smugglers were killed trying to infiltrate Jordan’s border with Syria, Jordan’s official Petra news agency reported.

The agency reported Sunday that Jordanian border guards engaged a group of 36 smugglers, dealing with the situation “in accordance with the rules of engagement.” It cited a military source.

Some of the suspected smugglers were armed, while others carried “materials that couldn’t be immediately identified,” it reported.

More than 2 million narcotic pills were recovered from the group, Petra reported.

The report said that besides those who were killed, some were wounded, and the rest fled back into Syrian territory.

The article did not state when the incident occurred.
