Dixon, Limbert Lead Lady Tide Into Win Column

WESTOVER — Juniors Hannah Dixon and Christine Limbert combined for 42 points to lead the Curwensville Area High School girls basketball team to its first win under first-year head coach Eric Duriancik Friday night.

Dixon tossed in a season-high 22 points, including 10 in 12 shots from the foul line, while Limbert exploded for a career-high 20 as the Lady Tide overcame a slow start to defeat host Harmony 51-38 in Moshannon Valley League action.

Neither scored in the first quarter when the Lady Owls jumped out to a 10-3 advantage, but Limbert tallied nine points and Dixon added seven in the second period to spur the Lady Tide to a 21-19 halftime edge.

“We made a lot of bad decisions for turnovers and didn’t work for good shots in the first quarter,” Duriancik said. “When we did get a shot, we couldn’t finish. We missed a lot of layups.

“But we went up at the half and that was a credit to the girls.”

Curwensville extended its advantage to six points, 33-27, as Limbert continued to dominate in the low post with eight more points in the third period.

“I don’t know the exact total, but Christine had a ton of rebounds, especially offensively,” Duriancik noted. “She crashed (the boards) hard.”

Then, Dixon took charge in the final eight minutes.

She converted nine of 10 free throws and accounted for 11 of the team’s 18 points in her role as playmaker as the Lady Tide steadily pulled away when the Lady Owls resorted to fouling.

“Hannah kept control of the ball most of the fourth quarter, which was good,” Duriancik said. “They had to reach and bump her and she was making the foul shots.”

The Lady Tide’s first win in four MVL games snapped a 10-game losing streak.

“I’m just really happy for the girls,” Duriancik said.

Topping Harmony (3-12) were Amanda Pennington and Tara Hauser with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

The senior-less Lady Owls had lost their previous three MVL outings by a total of just 14 points.

Harmony’s junior varsity was victorious, 38-9.

Curwensville goes to Ridgway for an Allegheny Mountain League South Division game onTuesday.
