Sanders not dwelling on ‘Bill Clinton’s sex life,’ but Trump won’t let go

Hillary Clinton won’t face criticism over Bill Clinton’s sexual indiscretions from her chief Democratic primary opponent.

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders said Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union” that he disagrees with Republican front-runner Donald Trump’s assertion that the former president’s personal life is fair game in the 2016 race.

“No, I think we’ve got more important things to worry about in this country than Bill Clinton’s sex life,” Sanders told CNN’s Dana Bash.

At least one Republican, though, has agreed with Trump. Carly Fiorina said she agrees Bill Clinton’s history is fair to mine against Hillary Clinton.

But she said attacks on Bill Clinton won’t be as effective as criticism of Hillary Clinton’s own record in defeating the Democratic presidential front-runner.

“The way to defeat Hillary Clinton is to go after her track record, her lack of accomplishment,” Fiorina told Bash.

“Any former president is fair game. Donald Trump threw George W. Bush under the bus several months ago. Any former president is fair game,” she said. “The question is, how do you beat Hillary Clinton.”

Trump has taken to bashing Bill Clinton’s personal life on the trail. On Saturday, he tweeted, “I hope Bill Clinton starts talking about women’s issues so that voters can see what a hypocrite he is and how Hillary abused those women!”

On Sunday, Trump continued his attacks.

“.@chucktodd said today on @meetthepress that “attacking Bill to get to Hillary has never worked before.” Wrong – attacked him in ’08 & won!” he tweeted.

Asked about Bill Clinton on the campaign trail in New Hampshire on Sunday, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said, “I have great respect for President Clinton and I’ve gotten to know him over the years. And he’s out working for his wife. Good for him. My wife’s out working for me. That’s a good thing.”

Donna Brazile, who served as Al Gore’s campaign manager in 2000, said that while Bill Clinton’s sex life is fair game, it won’t likely serve Republicans well in a general election.

“You can’t put this under the rug. It’s out there. So yes, deal with it. But you know, we can also says it’s an old issue, this election is about the future… If Donald Trump wants to go in the sewer and play this game, do it,” she told Bash Sunday on “State of the Union.”

“I think he’s an asset, a tremendous asset … Bill Clinton is an asset,” she added.
