DUBOIS – With an 8-0 run from the end of the third quarter to early in the fourth, the DuBois Lady Beavers girls basketball team won its second game of the year Monday night on its home court against the Lady Bison of Clearfield, 51-40.
Clearfield didn’t help its own cause, however, as it sandwiched the middle two productive quarters with two not so productive ones.
The Lady Beavers outscored Clearfield 9-3 after the first eight minutes, but over the next two quarters the Bison held their own, putting up 17 tallies in the second and 15 more in the third.
Another non-productive eight minutes, the fourth quarter, where Clearfield scored only five points, allowing the game to slip away.
Both teams now have identical 2-3 records on the 2015-16 season.
The Lady Bison actually held a 15-10 lead with 5:50 to go before halftime on a three pointer by senior Margo Castagnolo. Castagnolo paced the Clearfield offense with 11 points which included three treys.
It was a 9-0 run by the Lady Bison that gave them its first lead to start the second quarter.
The lead went back and forth a few times in the second frame, before DuBois took a 24-20 margin into intermission.
Two free throws at the 5:46 point of the third quarter by senior Rachel Glenny had Clearfield back in front 27-26.
The game was then knotted two more times, 27-27 and 29-29, before another Bison senior, Emily Ryan, hit a field goal that gave her squad its final lead of the evening at 31-29 with 4:02 remaining in the third.
DuBois then started to pull away over the final two minutes of the third quarter and outscored Clearfield in the fourth, 12-5, to pick up the 11-point victory.
Ryan helped the Bison offense with nine points.
The Lady Beaver attack was paced by seniors Courtney Chandler and Dayna Desalve who each scored 18 points.
DuBois was 14 of 26 from the free throw line and Clearfield hit on nine of 19 charity tosses.
A combined total of 40 fouls were whistled during the highly contested battle.
Clearfield won its first junior varsity game of the year (1-2), beating the Lady Beavers 42-29. Niki Chew and Alayna Ryan each had 12 for the Lady Bison.
The Lady Bison are the on road Wednesday night at Bellefonte.
