BROCKWAY – With a 31-10 second half advantage, the Brockway Lady Rovers broke open a tight game against the Curwensville Lady Tide Tuesday night on the Rovers’ home court to pick up its first win of the 2015-16 season, 46-24, in girls basketball.
The victory now has Brockway at 1-2 on the year while the Tide are still searching for its first win under new head coach Erik Durianick. Curwensville is 0-2 thus far.
Curwensville took an early lead after the first eight minutes, 9-8, thanks to six points by junior guard Hannah Dixon, who led the Lady Tide in scoring on the evening with nine points, all scored in the first half of action.
The biggest margin for either team in the first half was three points. Brockway had a 6-3 lead halfway through the first quarter and the Tide an 11-8 margin with about a minute gone in the second frame.
Leah Lindemuth of the Lady Rovers kicked her game up a notch in the second quarter, scoring five points that helped Brockway maintain a one point halftime lead, 15-14.
Then Lindemuth found a higher notch in the third quarter, scoring 10 tallies of her game high 21 that set the pace for the Rover offense.
With 3:20 left in the third Brockway was in front of the visiting Lady Tide by just one point, 23-22.
Then, just like that, ice cold shooting clogged the Curwensville offense as they were outscored the rest of the way 23-2.
As mentioned, Brockway outscored Curwensville 31-10 in the second half to give Rover head coach Dick Esposito the win.
Duriancik said after the game, “Well, the first thing we are going to work on in practice on Wednesday is learning how to grab the ball and catch the ball. We just let too many balls get away from us. And of course everyone needs to continue to work on the fundamentals of the game.”
The new Lady Tide skipper continued with, “We had way too many turnovers, especially in the first half, but we cleaned that up some in the second half. Everyone just needs to be on the same page. But between the first game and this game, our second, we did get better. And that’s always encouraging.”
Brockway also won the junior varsity game by a score of 34-11.
The Lady Tide return to the hardwood next Monday with an away trip to West Branch to play the Lady Warriors. Junior varsity tips off at 6 pm with the varsity to immediately follow.
