Ryan’s 24 Points Spur Running Game in Lady Bison Romp

BROOKVILLE — Senior guard Emily Ryan scored a career-high 24 points as the Clearfield Lady Bison shifted their running game into high gear and raced past a very young Clarion-Limestone team 64-24 in the consolation game of the Brookville Girls Tip-Off Tournament Saturday afternoon.

Classmate Rachel Glenny netted 16 points from point-blank range, including three putbacks and four layups on fast breaks, to go with seven rebounds and three steals to lock up a berth on the all-tourney team.

Junior Ally Lindstrom reached double figures for the first time with 10 points and added seven rebounds, while senior Sam Rockmore teamed with Glenny to control the low post by snaring a game-high 11 rebounds.

“All nine kids played a nice game,” coach Joey Castagnolo said. “A couple are getting varsity experience right now.

“I was happy to come up here and go 1-1. We played our hearts out (Friday) night, and, today, we took care of business.”

The Lady Bison proved early on they were superior to an opponent that started three of the 10 freshmen who played by jumping off to a 12-2 start in the first six minutes.

They never looked back, building cushions of 16-6 at the first rest stop with Ryan and Glenny tossing in three field goals apiece, 35-13 at halftime and 48-22 going to the final period.

“We were the much quicker team,” Castagnolo said. “You could tell who had played a lot more basketball, but they didn’t quit and they scrapped. They gave us a run in the third quarter, where I wasn’t happy with our girls. We got sloppy.”

Not on defense.

The Lady Lions found it very difficult penetrating the Lady Bison’s 1-3-1 and match-up zones and rarely got any open looks on the perimeter. They were able to launch only 18 shots in the first half.

Clearfield forced 33 turnovers, and 22 were steals. Ryan had six of them and took four right to the hoop. She also slashed through the Lady Lions for four easy layups.

“Emily had a really nice game,” Castagnolo said.

Most of the Lady Bison’s 30 field goals that resulted in a shooting percentage of 50.8 were right under the basket with almost two-thirds ending runouts, fast breaks or drives through the lane.

“They couldn’t stop us,” Castagnolo said. “We did a lot of things I wanted to do. We ran the floor, we rebounded very well, and we got to work on both of our zone defenses. We just haven’t been able to work on man enough, though.”

All of the Lady Bison contributed to their 46-19 rebounding bulge and six had at least one steal.

Two of the three Lady Lion upperclassmen teamed up for bulk of their points. Lone junior Paige Aaron was high with 13 and senior Josie Stitt tallied seven.

Clearfield will begin the home slate Tuesday against Central in a Mountain League opener.

Behind 28 points and 14 rebounds by tournament Most Valuable Player Hali Olson, Brookville defeated North Clarion 59-49 in the championship game.

Abbie Schmader had 22 points while Tori Oberlander added 14 points and grabbed 16 rebounds for North Clarion. The duo combined for 45 points in Friday‘s 50-44 win over Clearfield.
