MEN’S SWIMMING

NEW WILMINGTON — Freshman Michael Spencer (Clearfield) was a triplewinner as undefeated Westminster defeated Washington & Jefferson 202-95 in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference dual meet last Wednesday for the 400th win in program history.

Spencer touched the wall first in 22.50 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle and 55.72 in the 100 butterfly before giving the Titans’ 400 freestyle relay quartet a come-from-behind victory (3:22.37) with a 49.15 anchor leg that was the race’s fastest split.

He also earned second-place points in the 100 free in 50.06.

Westminster upped its record to 6-0 by beating undermanned Chatham 40-11 Saturday for a 3-0 start in the PAC.

Spencer only competed in the 200 medley relay, posting a 23.86 butterfly split as the Titans won in 1:44.25.

BLOOMSBURG — Freshman Alex Shugarts (Clearfield) swam the second leg in 22.39 seconds for the Edinboro 200-yard freestyle relay foursome that was victorious in 1:30.33 in a 114-85 loss to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference rival Bloomsburg Saturday.

He also finished fourth in the 100 freestyle in 50.74 and fifth in the 50 free in 22.63.

The Fighting Scots are 1-2.

WRESTLING

MOUNT UNION, Ohio — Junior 165-pounder Nolan Barger (Clearfield) earned bonus points in three of his four victories for Lycoming in the Mount Union Duals Saturday.

After opening with a 3-1 squeaker over Blake Perry of Baldwin Wallace, Barger breezed to an 18-1 technical fall against Ferrum’s Mark Allen and then pinned Alma’s Taylor McPhail at the 5:31 mark and Heidelberg’s Darren Decker in 1:31.

The Warriors, ranked No. 23 in last week’s National Wrestling Coaches Association NCAA Division II Poll, lost 29-6 to No. 4 Baldwin-Wallace, 22-17 to Ferrum and 33-9 to No. 20 Alma before defeating No. 28 Heidelberg 26-15.

Barger is 6-0.

CLARION — Redshirt junior 149-pounder Jake Keller (Curwensville) was a fall victim in Clarion’s 23-15 loss to No. 28-ranked Edinboro in Waldo S. Tippin Gym Friday night.

The Fighting Scots’ Patrick Lugo, a two-time Florida state champion who won his final 132 matches for a 225-14 career record, improved to 9-0 with his 26-second pin. He was named Eastern Wrestling League Freshman of the Week after winning a Roadrunner Open title on the West Coast.

Keller is 1-4 in dual meets and 5-6 overall for the Golden Eagles, who are 2-4 with a 1-1 EWL record.

AKRON, Ohio — Freshman 141-pounder Jake Lancaster (Curwensville) won by forfeit as Penn State Dubois padded its record to 5-1 with a 49-6 victory over Akron Saturday.

The Lions topped West Virginia Tech 28-25 in their first match of the day.

Lancaster (5-2) notched three wins, two by forfeit, when Penn State DuBois went 3-1 in Pennsylvania State University Athletic Conference Duals at Penn State Fayette on Nov. 15.

In his lone match, he pinned the hosts’ Michael Perdomo at 3:38.

Penn State DuBois shut out Penn State South Fayette 55-0 and Penn State New Kensington 60-0 and routed Penn State Beaver 46-6. The loss was to Mont Alto in a tie-breaker after the teams tied 30-30.

FOOTBALL

SLIPPERY ROCK — Redshirt senior strong safety Derek Morgan (Clearfield) was one of Slippery Rock’s top defenders Saturday when The Rock, ranked No. 10 by the American Football Coaches Association, opened the NCAA Division II Playoffs by turning back Virginia Union 40-21 in front of 1,425 fans at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

Morgan was involved in five tackles, three of them solo stops, and had one interception and one pass break-up. He had a second interception negated by a penalty.

Slippery Rock’s defense enhanced its nation-leading takeaway total to 41 with three fumble recoveries and three interceptions en route to the program’s first playoff win since 1998.

Morgan owns three of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference kingpin’s 22 picks and is fourth on the team in passes defended with seven.

He has 22 solo tackles and 14 assists in 10 games, including nine starts.

Seeded No. 2 in Super Region One, The Rock (11-1) will host Northeast-10 Conference first-time champion and No. 3 seed Assumption (11-1) Saturday at noon. Assumption advanced with a 51-29 win over No. 6 seed Bowie State.

WOMEN’S SWIMMING

BLOOMSBURG — Sophomore Kara Thorp (Clearfield) earned points in three events for Edinboro (1-2) in Saturday’s 118-76 loss to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference rival Bloomsburg.

She placed fourth in the 500-yard freestyle in 3:53.32 and fifth in the 200 free in 2:09.11 before registering a 28.06-second split for the Fighting Scot ‘B’ 200 freestyle relay quartet that finished second in 1:52.47.
