At least three officers were killed and more were injured Wednesday in a bombing outside the Police Officers’ Club in North Sinai, Egypt’s state-run Nile TV reported.
ISIS later claimed responsibility for the attack, which it said was in response to the Egyptian government’s detention of women in the Sinai Peninsula. CNN could not immediately verify this claim.
North Sinai has been the site of regular militant attacks on security institutions as the army continues to battle an Islamist insurgency there.
The insurgency has spiked since the 2013 ouster of Islamist President Mohamed Morsy.
