Campus Corner: Thorp Ties for Eighth in PAC Fall Tourney; Aleksivich Scores Goal, Munshower Has Assist for Behrend

BELLE VERNON — Thiel sophomore Jason Thorp (Curwensville) carded a 79 Friday and a 76 Saturday to tie for eighth place in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Fall Championships at the Cedar Brook Golf Club.

The Tomcats had a 324-309-633 to tie Thomas More (322-311) for third behind Saint Vincent (313-303-616) and Grove City (312-308-620) in the seven-team tournament.

Tomcat Jeff Jenkins matched par with a 72 on the second day for a 152 that was bettered only by individual champion Jake Reed. The Saint Vincent standout posted a 143.

Thorp, whose 76 was the fifth best score on Saturday, and Cody Slevin shared medalist honors for Thiel with 78s at the New Castle Country Club to pace the Tomcats to the Westminster Invitational championship Tuesday, Sept. 28.

Thorp and Slevin wound up in a three-way tie for second place among the 53 players from nine teams.

With a 319 total, the Tomcats bested Penn State Altoona by four strokes in their second tournament win of the season.

ROARING SPRINGS — Sophomore Brett Gardner (Curwensville) posted an 80 at the Iron Masters Country Club to lead Pitt-Bradford to third place in the Penn State Altoona Invitational Friday.

Gardner tied for fourth overall.

The Panthers totaled a season-best 337 to finish behind Pitt-Greensburg (315) and Penn State Altoona (320) in the five-team tourney.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

ERIE — Sophomore midfielder McKenna Aleksivich (Clearfield) notched her first goal and freshman forward Tessa Munshower (Clearfield) earned her first assist as Penn State Behrend routed Hilbert (N.Y.) 7-0 in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference action at Behrend Field last Wednesday.

According to the Behrend web site, Aleksivich buried a direct kick into the lower left corner, skipping the ball on the wet turf past the Hilbert goalkeeper in the 85th minute to make it 6-0.

In the final minute, Munshower got off a shot that hit the top crossbar, with Caitlin Caldwell converting the rebound into a goal.

Aleksivich had three shots, two on goal, and Munshower launched four attempts.

Sophomore defender Katie Powers (Clearfield) also had one shot on goal.

On Saturday, Powers and Munshower played in the Lions’ 5-0 shutout of Franciscan, their third AMCC win in a row for a 6-5 record.

CLARION – After starting nine games at forward, sophomore Carlee Freeburg (Clearfield) was moved to defense for Clarion’s two Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference road games last weekend.

She played all but six minutes for the Golden Eagles in a 3-0 victory at Lock Haven Friday and a 1-0 loss at Mansfield Saturday.

Earlier in the week, Freeburg recorded her first two shots of the season, one that hit the goalpost, as Clarion (3-7-1, 3-6-1 PSAC) was edged 1-0 by Ashland (Ohio) in a non-conference game at Memorial Stadium.

Freeburg ranks fourth on the team in minutes played.

FOOTBALL

LOCK HAVEN — Senior running back Beau Swales (Clearfield) carried 15 times for 49 yards in Lock Haven’s 33-9 loss to West Chester in front of only 281 fans who braved the rain and cold temperatures at Hubert Jack Stadium Saturday.

The Bald Eagles fell to 0-2 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Division with their fifth consecutive setback.

Swales is ranked eighth in PSAC statistics with 406 yards on 71 carries, a 5.7 average. He also has seven pass receptions for 51 yards.

ERIE — Redshirt senior Derek Morgan (Clearfield) started at strong safety but was not involved in any tackles as Slippery Rock spoiled the rainy Saturday afternoon for the host Gannon faithful among the 1,231 fans at McConnell Family Stadium with a 41-14 rout.

The Rock (4-1) scored the final 35 points to balance their Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Division record at 1-1.

In the first four games, Morgan had 19 tackles, including eight solo stops, intercepted on pass and broke up two passes.

CLARION — Senior Eric White (Clearfield) was the longsnapper for Phil Esposito’s five extra points and two field goals as well as two punts as Clarion remained undefeated by turning back Mercyhurst 41-27 at Memorial Stadium.

A crowd of 2,750 turned out on the rainy, cold afternoon to watch the Golden Eagles move to 5-0 for the first time since 1983 and retain a share of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Division lead with Indiana University of Pennsylvania and California at 2-0.

HUNTINGDON — Sophomore offensive lineman Jon Janocko (Clearfield) saw his first action of the season for Juniata in a 41-5 Centennial Conference loss to No. 8-ranked Johns Hopkins in front of 1,100 fans at Chuck Knox Stadium Saturday.

The Eagles are 0-4 in the conference and 1-4 overall.

ANNVILLE — After being moved from defense to offense, sophomore Brad Stubbs (Curwensville) made his first start at right tackle for Lycoming, which came out on the short end of a 41-38 overtime final against host Lebanon Valley at Arnold Field Saturday.

The Middle Atlantic Conference rivals treated the 1,875 fans to a thriller as the Warriors scored twice to take their first lead, 35-28, with 1:49 remaining in the fourth quarter, only to watch the Dutchmen forge the fifth tie with 25 seconds left and then counter Lycoming’s field goal with another touchdown in the extra period.

Freshman linebacker Nick Kovalick (Clearfield) also played for Lycoming, which tumbled to 1-3 in the MAC and 1-4 for the season.

WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

BETHLEHEM — St. Francis junior Rebecca Johnson (Curwensville) crossed the finish line in 25:56 at Lehigh’s 42nd Paul Short Invitational sponsored by Asics and Schuylkill Valley Sports Friday.

More than 1,300 runners from 124 teams toured the Goodman Cross Country Course.

Johnson did not earn any points for the Red Flash, who placed 15th among 45 teams in the Brown race with a score of 379.
