‘Doctor Who’ premiere: Two die

“Doctor Who” fans (or “Whovians”) were excited to see the 12th Doctor return to the small screen, but they didn’t expect this.

Oh, you haven’t watched the episode? Here it is below. I’ll wait:

The Doctor’s companion (Jenna Coleman) and his biggest frenemy were both exterminated by Daleks in the closing minutes of Sunday night’s season premiere.

It was an episode that gave us a rock star Doctor (Peter Capaldi, who had a rock band in his youth) wailing on a guitar, the amazing return of Missy (a.k.a. the Master), and the big reveal that the Doctor had the chance to let the Daleks’ leader Davros live or die.

But back to Missy: she and the Doctor both knew how to make an entrance (the aforementioned guitar scene) in this episode, with Missy (Michelle Gomez) announcing her presence by stopping all the planes in the air, even though the Doctor vaporized her last season.

“It felt like a sweet victory,” Michelle Gomez told CNN.

“‘You can vaporize me but it’s not gonna make me any different. I’m just gonna come back stronger.’ A little different though, but she’s definitely back with a vengeance.”

She also referred to herself as the Doctor’s best friend (and to Clara as the Doctor’s puppy).

“You’re seeing another layer of their relationship,” Gomez said.

“This year it’s just on a different level, exploring the history of their relationship.”

When the Doctor came face to face with Davros, having realized he had left a younger Davros to die (though he obviously survived), the Doctor’s enemy had no mercy to spare.

The Daleks cornered Missy and Clara, and despite Missy’s attempts to become a new leader for the Daleks, they exterminated her, and then Clara moments later (and the TARDIS to boot).

In the final scene, the Doctor had returned to that moment with Davros as a child, and was ready to exterminate him, save his friends and subsequently, wipe the Daleks from existence.

Needless to say this cliffhanger made quite an impact on Whovians:

However, Missy has already survived death more than once, and Jenna Coleman recently announced her departure from the series – but not until the end of the season.

So we’ll just have to wait until next week to see what became of the pair.
