Golden Tide Offensive Again, Roll Otto-Eldred 58-20

DUKE CENTER – For the second straight week the Curwensville Area High School football squad put up big offensive numbers. And for the second straight week the Golden Tide picked up a victory.

In its first road trip of the young 2015 season the Tide traveled north to Otto-Eldred and drove back with a 58-20 win over the Terrors to improve to 2-0 on the year while Otto-Eldred dropped to 0-2.

Once again Golden Tide running backs Nick Stewart and Hunter Johnson each topped the 100 yard rushing mark with sophomore Stewart picking up 259 on the ground with Johnson, a senior, adding 137.

The Tide scored the only points in the first quarter on the familiar hook-up of quarterback Jake Terry to wide receiver Quamone Newkirk on a 39 yard touchdown toss with 6:22 left in the first. The extra point was missed, but the Golden Tide took a 6-0 lead into the second period.

Five touchdowns were tallied in the second 12 minutes as the Tide scored three times to take a 30-14 halftime lead.

With 11:52 to go in the second quarter Johnson ran 13 yards for a Tide score that was followed by a Terry to Nick Stewart two point conversion pass giving the visitors from Curwensville a 14-0 margin.

Just 18 seconds later Heath Stewart put Otto-Eldred on the board with a 53 yard touchdown run. Seth Drummond ran in the two point conversion making it 14-8 in favor of Curwensville.

Game on. Well sort of.

Nick Stewart pushed the Tide lead to 20-8 on the first of his three scores on the night with a 41 yard scamper to the end zone with 6:10 remaining before the halftime break. Ben Junod ran in the two point conversion attempt stretching the Tide’s edge to 22-8.

At that point it looked the Golden Tide were set to run away with the contest but Seth Drummond threw a 45 yard half back option touchdown pass to Heath Stewart with 3:26 to go in the second quarter to put Otto-Eldred back in the contest. The Terrors failed on the two point conversion but nonetheless now only trailed 22-14.

Seventeen seconds later the Tide handed the ball to their standout sophomore Nick Stewart. All Stewart did was race 65 yards to pay dirt with Johnson scoring the two point conversion attempt that gave Curwensville a 30-14 bulge at the half.

The Tide extended its lead to 44-20 with the first two TDs of the second half. One, a 76 yard run by Nick Stewart, his third of the night, and a one yard plunge by Johnson who also ran in the two point conversion attempt after Stewart’s long score. The PAT attempt after the Johnson touchdown was missed.

The Terrors registered its last touchdown with 1:44 remaining in the third frame on a Sawyer Drummond five yard strike to Michael Motyka. The try for two was no good.

Curwensville added another two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to finish out the evening’s scoring.

Junod scored from five yards out, while sophomore Caleb Bloom added a score on an eight yard run. Jared Bakaysa added the extra point after each touchdown.

For the Terrors, Drummond also had a big night with his 121 yards on 23 carries.

The Tide are back home at Riverside Stadium next Friday night when they battle Coudersport with a 7 pm kick-off.

The Falcons are 0-2 after losing to Brockway Friday night, 50-14.
