Suicide Prevention and Awareness Walk Slated for Sept. 13

DUBOIS – The Clearfield-Jefferson Suicide Prevention Team Inc. will hold its sixth annual Walk for Suicide Prevention and Awareness on Sept. 13 at the DuBois City Park.

Registration begins at 1 p.m.  The program will begin at 2 p.m.

The featured speakers include Bill Mendat, mental health director for Community Connections of Clearfield/Jefferson Counties; Debbie Michuck and Jean Dixon on their personal experiences as survivors of suicide; Zachariah Pearson, veterans outreach coordinator from The Vet Center; and Pastor Harold Hills of the Smithtown Community Church.

The walk will begin at approximately 2:30 p.m. with activities, such as raffles, free refreshments, musical entertainment by Suny 106 and a special appearance by Captain McFinn, mascot for the national anti-bullying program of the same name.

The Wal-Mart Distribution Center has donated a laptop computer and printer to be raffled off as well as many other items donated by area businesses and individuals.

Everyone is invited to bring pictures, poems, etc., to place on the Memory Wall.  Team pictures will be taken.

Providers of mental health services will be available to provide information on related topics and treatment options.  Immediately following the walk, there will be a candlelight memorial service for the survivors at the DuBois Senior and Community Center located adjacent to the DuBois City Park.

Suicide rates in the United States as well as in Clearfield and Jefferson counties are increasing at alarming rates.
