Controversial British preacher Anjem Choudary is one of two men charged Wednesday with inviting support for ISIS, UK prosecutors said.
Choudary, 48, and the second man charged, Mohammed Mizanur Rahman, age 32, are due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London charged with one offense each of supporting ISIS, also known by the acronym ISIL.
“We have concluded that there is sufficient evidence and it is in the public interest to prosecute Anjem Choudary and Mohammed Rahman for inviting support for ISIL, a proscribed terrorist organisation, between 29 June 2014 and 6 March this year,” Sue Hemming, head of special crime and counterterrorism at the Crown Prosecution Service, said in a statement.
“It is alleged that Anjem Choudary and Mohammed Rahman invited support for ISIS in individual lectures which were subsequently published online.”
The charges follow an investigation by London’s Metropolitan Police. The two men have been on bail since they were arrested last September, a police statement said.
